Dental implants are a great solution to missing tooth replacement. They can be used to replace individual teeth or used to secure dentures or dental bridges. At Dr. James M. Stein's Boston cosmetic dentistry practice, you will find the latest treatments in dental implant restorations.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implant treatment is a restorative dentistry procedure used to replace missing teeth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The dental implant is made of a metal post, usually titanium, which is surgically implanted within the tooth socket of the jaw. The jawbone is left to heal for six to 12 weeks. As the bone heals around the post, a secure bond is created. At this point, the implant is anchored within the jawbone to act like your own tooth root. Once healed, a prosthetic tooth, called a crown, is attached to the titanium post by a connector called an abutment; this step completes the dental implant treatment process.

The Other Uses of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great option for replacing individual teeth but for those who are missing more than one tooth, implant-supported dentures or implant-supported bridges may be a better solution. Dental implants can be used to firmly secure a set of dentures within the mouth. Implant-supported dentures offer a great option for those who already have dentures. With implant-supported dentures, your dentures won't slip or move so you can talk and eat with confidence. Implant-supported bridges are another option in tooth replacement. These are best suited to those missing multiple teeth but not enough for a full set of dentures.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer many benefits. Not only can they be used to replace individual teeth, but they can also be used to anchor dentures and dental bridges within the mouth. The largest benefit of dental implants is the confidence of knowing your teeth will stay in place.
