A Closer Look at Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a primarily cosmetic procedure intended to improve the size, shape, and color of teeth. The team at our office carefully customizes the shade of the resin to match your natural teeth so that the treatment blends in seamlessly with your smile.

Dental bonding can conceal a range of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Deep dental stains that do not respond to teeth whitening treatment
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Cracked and chipped teeth
  • Teeth that are disproportionate in size or are asymmetrical

While typically a cosmetic treatment, we may recommend using bonding as an alternative to traditional dental fillings in certain cases, as well.

Bonding vs. Veneers

Dental bonding can address many of the same imperfections as porcelain veneers, but there are a few instances when bonding may be a better solution. Because the doctor does not need to remove enamel or change the structure of a tooth to use dental bonding, the treatment is often appropriate for patients with sensitive teeth due to enamel erosion.

The lack of tooth alteration also means that bonding is a non-permanent treatment. Consequently, it is often recommended to patients looking for a temporary solution or who do not want to commit to veneers. Additionally, because the treatment is less involved than that of porcelain veneers, it is often more cost-effective, as well.

Like natural teeth, dental bonding requires attentive care to last as long as possible.

The Dental Bonding Process

Treatment begins with a consultation with Dr. Stein to evaluate your candidacy. If it seems like the most appropriate solution to your aesthetic concerns, we can plan out treatment and schedule your appointment.

To place the bonding, Dr. Stein will first insert a barrier between the teeth and gums to keep the treatment area dry. With a close eye for detail, he can then begin applying the resin to each tooth. He will mold and shape the material carefully to conceal flaws and create a realistic, attractive appearance.

Finally, Dr. Stein will apply a curing light to harden the composite and polish the bonded teeth for a realistic look. Depending on the number of teeth treated, the entire process may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

Maintaining Your Results

Like natural teeth, dental bonding requires attentive care to last as long as possible. Composite resin is especially susceptible to staining, so you will want to avoid foods and beverages that can discolor your smile. Coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tobacco products are some of the most common culprits. Additionally, patients should refrain from certain habits that may dislodge or compromise the bonding material, like chewing on ice or their fingernails. Maintaining your smile with regular professional cleanings and exams is also key.
