The Cost of Invisalign
/
Your total cost will depend on several factors, including the complexity of your case, the length of your treatment, and how well you abide by your care plan. Invisalign is often considered a qualified medical expense when it’s not strictly for cosmetic purposes, meaning it’s eligible for coverage through a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA). During your consultation with Dr. Stein at our Boston dental office, we will provide you with a cost estimate.

How Does Invisalign Work?
To straighten teeth and close gaps, your teeth need to be moved into the correct position. Metal braces rely on brackets and wires to shift teeth. Invisalign uses the same orthodontic philosophy, except this method uses a series of clear aligner trays to correct the position of your teeth.
After assessing your mouth and taking detailed digital images, we carefully map out where your teeth should go and then have a series of custom aligner trays designed that will gradually move your teeth into their proper positions. Most patients receive between 20 and 40 aligners for their treatment. About every two weeks, you will switch to the next set of aligners in the series. Each new tray moves your teeth a little bit closer to their ideal position.
You Could Be a Great Candidate
Motivated and Responsible
Patients looking to take advantage of the convenience of removable aligners need to be committed to the process. This means actually wearing their aligners daily for the prescribed time, which is 20 to 22 hours each day. Aligners can't move your teeth if you aren't wearing them.
In Good Oral Health
If you have gum disease, cavities, or other dental health problems, we can resolve these issues in-office before starting orthodontic treatment. Luckily, once treatment begins, aligners make brushing and flossing easier and faster compared to patients wearing traditional braces.
Mild to Moderate Concerns
Invisalign is effective in treating mild to moderate dental misalignment, but it's important to understand that severe cases may be better suited to traditional braces. We will only recommend Invisalign if it is truly a fit for your needs. Dr. Stein will fully assess your case during a consultation.

Address Common Concerns With Invisalign
Advances in Invisalign technology mean most people with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns qualify for this convenient and discreet path to a more beautiful smile. The clear aligner system can address common concerns such as:
- Gaps
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Overbite
- Open Bite
- Crooked Teeth
- Orthodontic Relapse
- Crowded Overlapping Teeth
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder
During a consultation at our Boston office, Dr. Stein can assess your mouth, digitally scan your teeth, and determine the correct path to a more beautiful smile. If you have serious misalignment, we may recommend traditional orthodontic treatment for the best results.
FAQ About Invisalign in Boston, MA

Does Invisalign hurt?
Invisalign may cause mild pressure or discomfort when starting a new set of aligners, which is a sign that the treatment is working. This discomfort usually fades within a few days. Most patients find Invisalign more comfortable than traditional braces.
Can I eat and drink with Invisalign?
You should remove your Invisalign aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps prevent staining and damage to the aligners. One of the biggest benefits for Invisalign patients is the freedom to eat their favorite foods without restrictions.
Can Invisalign treat complex cases?
Invisalign can treat more severe cases of misalignment than ever before, using advancements like SmartForce attachments and elastics that can aid in more complex tooth movements. However, if your misalignment is too severe, you may be a better candidate for traditional braces.
How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?
Aligners should be cleaned twice a day using a soft toothbrush, lukewarm water, and a mild soap, or Invisalign cleaning crystals. Avoid hot water, which can warp the aligners. Proper cleaning helps keep your aligners clear and free of bacteria.
